Boredom-free dates for board gamers (Five great ideas)

If you and your date are board game buffs, then a round of your favourite game is a fab date idea.

However, games with big boxes and lots of little pieces aren’t very practical to take on a date!

Here are some portable options so that you can still enjoy the fun (and competition!) wherever you go.

Dating tip: if it’s a game you both already play, discuss any nuances on the rules before you start to avoid any disagreements during the game!

Exploding Kittens

Animal lovers, don’t fret! No kitties are harmed in this easy to learn, fun card game based on Russian Roulette (but without the risk of death, obvs).

Use portable cheetah butt, kitten yoga, bear-o-dactyl and other cards to avoid being the victim of an exploding kitten card.

Starting out on crowdfunding site Kickstarter, Exploding Kittens went on to sell over 10 million sets and has won Game of the Year.

Perfectly portable, there are expansion packs available and even an NSFW version if you’re feeling cheeky.

Articulate Mini

This classic game sounds simple enough: describe a word without actually saying what it is. But add an egg timer and a bit of competition and suddenly it’s not so simple!

This version does away with the counters and board, with everything neatly tucked away into a little box for playing on the move.

Monopoly Deal

This version of Monopoly can be played in as little as 15 minutes, and because it’s a card game, can be enjoyed anywhere, with no top hats or little dogs to lose along the way!

In this version, you need to collect 3 complete property sets to win. However Debt Collectors, Forced Deals and Deal Breakers can change your fortunes with the pick of a card.

Although not the full Monopoly experience for die-hard fans of the game, it’s fun for a quick fix – and because it’s so quick to play, it’s easier to redeem yourself in the next game if you lose!

A Shot in the Dark

A game for trivia fans, with a twist. The questions are designed to be the “most bizarre, interesting and hilarious…to which nobody knows the answer”. So the idea is to make an educated guess, or – as the name suggests – take a shot in the dark.

This game will teach you lots of random facts and can be a good leveller because both trivia whizzes and those who don’t normally do well at traditional quizzes can have the same chance at getting the right answer.

Struggle for Catan

Here’s one for the strategy game fans. The original Settlers of Catan game is a board game where you compete to gather resources and build the biggest settlements on the fictional island of Catan.

This is a fast-paced, stand-alone card game version. You can still get knights, build roads, settlements, cities, and more to earn victory points – just without a board and all the tiny loseable pieces.

Happy Gaming!
