How To Tell If You’re A Geek

Do you enjoy spending your free time playing Dungeons and Dragons, World of Warcraft or another role-playing game? Do you know more about computers than most people? If you answered yes to either of these questions, there’s a good chance you’re a geek. But don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, there are plenty of awesome things about being a geek. Here are eight tell-tale signs that you might be a geek.

What does it take to be a geek? This is a question that many people have wondered about, but it’s hard to say what exactly it means. Some might say that geeks are highly intellectual individuals who are obsessively passionate over computer technology or elements of pop culture. But this may not be entirely accurate. It could be said that geeks are defined more by their attitudes than what they do. Even though they may be socially awkward, their extraordinary attitudes are something special and rare – something that should be encouraged.

There’s no doubt that geeks are becoming more mainstream. With people like Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg paving the way, being a geek is more popular than ever. So where do you stand on the geek-o-meter?

1. Do you have an intense love for something?

People who love what they do, obsessively and passionately, can be seen as geeks. They typically have a distinct interest in technology, gaming, or comics. They are always willing to learn more and are the first to know about news or updates in their area of interest. While others may see this behavior as strange, for geeks it is the center of their lives. Do you have an area of interest that defines you? If so, congratulations, you are closer to being a geek than you think.

2. Do you see yourself as different from other people?

One distinguishing factor between geeks and other people may be their total dedication to the things they love. This may be gaming, high-tech devices, or comics. Geeks are always willing to put in extra effort (sometimes to extreme lengths) to make sure they’re the first to know about the latest news or updates.

To others, this may just be a hobby or something fun to do. To them though, it’s everything. It defines who they are. This is why they’re so dedicated to it and why they stand out from the rest.

3. Are you ‘Ethnocentric’?

People who are considered geeks often view themselves as vastly different from others. They also have a lot of pride in their understanding of subjects, which can make it difficult for them to see things from an outsider’s point of view. Because they often expect others to comprehend what they mean without a need for explanation, geeks can be less socially compatible with those who don’t share their interests or backgrounds.

4. Do you get lost In Your Obsession?

Do you get lost in your work, becoming fully engaged and not noticing the time passing? This is called “flow” and geeks who are into gaming often achieve it. They become so addicted to this feeling of euphoria that they lose track of time and hunger.

5. Do You Have Need to Know Everything?

Geeks have an insatiable need to know everything. They love exploring and keeping themselves updated on the things they’re obsessed with. This can be seen in their constant reading, attendance at events and conferences, and eagerness to break news. For them, it’s all about being the first to know and have control over what they’re good at and love doing.

6. Do you have the determination to succeed no matter what

Geek culture is renowned for its experts. They’re always happy to talk about their obsession with outsiders, even though they might get frustrated when others don’t understand them. Even though they may not show it, geeks take pride in the fact that they’re experts in their field. After all, becoming an expert is their life goal.

7. Do you Have a Niche Within Your Passion?

People who are passionate about something tend to specialize in a particular area. This is known as having a niche. For example, computer geeks are often interested in many areas of computing, but they often have a particular preference or brand they like best. It’s like going to the next level of fanaticism, where you focus on one specific niche. This is why we always hear debates between supporters of different operating systems, like Android vs iOS.

8. Are You Willing to Stick to it Til the End?

Geek fandom is great because people are willing to stick to it no matter what. They are loyal to their favorite OS, comic, superhero, cosplay costume, and more. Even when things get tough, they don’t give up. This makes them different and special compared to others. It’s not just an objective assessment of their fandom – it’s more than that. They feel a strong emotional connection to it.
